CHAPTER 11

That evening, they joined Zoe and Chris next door. Annie accompanied them, and was busy eating the bowl of raw beef Chris had prepared for her.

The cozy kitchen boasted 1960s décor, including original pastel green cabinets and a darker green countertop, as well as Chris’s old Formica table and chairs, set with a red and white tablecloth and cutlery.

The savory scent of beef, chili, and spices wafted through the kitchen.

“I’m starving,” Mitch said, leaning back in his chair.

“It’ll be ready in a minute,” Chris promised.

Mitch turned to Lauren. “Have you told Zoe about your theory about Nadia?”

“No, she hasn’t.” Zoe’s eyes lit up. “What is it?”

Lauren told her what she’d thought of last night, during dinner with Mitch.

“What if Nadia sort of stalked Greg, and killed Robin so she could be his new girlfriend and help run Robin’s fashion label? But as Mitch pointed out, how would Nadia know that Robin had made a will leaving everything to Greg?”

“Unless the lawyer who made the will blabbed,” Zoe said instantly.

“That’s what I said.” Lauren smiled.

“Ooh – what if she seduced the will lawyer to get him to blab?”

“But how would she know who the lawyer was in the first place?” Chris asked.

“Good point.” Zoe nodded. “Unless she really was stalking Robin and followed her to the lawyer, and guessed she was making a will, so then she seduced the lawyer to find out what was in it?”

“That could be a possibility,” Mitch conceded. “Or seduced him to find out why Robin hired him, and then found out about the will.”

“And once she knew Robin was leaving everything to Greg, she killed Robin, and latched onto Greg, getting him on the rebound, and then seduced him into going along with her plans to get the clothes made offshore and into department stores around the world, making her rich in the process, and making him think it was his idea!” Zoe looked satisfied with her thought process.

“I wonder what sort of job Nadia has now,” Lauren said thoughtfully. “Especially since Hans told us she might be the childhood friend of his daughter.”

They continued talking about the case over chili. The rich, meaty dish satisfied Lauren’s hunger, and she noticed Mitch eating with gusto.

Annie sat beside her, looking at the filled bowl curiously, but not asking for any.

“All the chili and spices in it wouldn’t be good for you,” she told her fur baby. “Besides, Chris already gave you your dinner.”

“Brrt.” And it was yummy.

Chris smiled at the feline.

Zoe served up chocolate ice-cream for dessert. “That reminds me, we want to get together for dinner at Gary’s Burger Diner during the week.” She turned to her husband. “Which nights are good for you?”

“Wednesday,” Chris replied. “I’m off that day.”

“Suits me,” Mitch said.

Lauren agreed, and Zoe made a note on her phone.

“Brrt?” Annie asked.

“Yes, I’ll bring you home a plain patty from Gary’s.” She stroked Annie’s velvety soft fur.

“Brrp.” Thank you.

“Oh – Mrs. Snuggle would like to have a playdate with you sometime.” Lauren remembered Father Mike’s request.
